The Schooner Mystic Whaler was designed by Chubb Crocket and built by George Sutton in Tarpon Springs, Florida. She was launched on January 19, 1967. She had a major overhaul in Providence, Rhode Island in 1993. She is a reproduction of a nineteenth century coastal cargo schooner and was specifically designed for passenger trade.

The Whaler is 83’ on deck and spar length is 110’. Her beam is 25’. She draws 7.5’ with the centerboard up and 12.5’ with the board down. Air draft is 90’. She displaces 107 tons and her gross tonnage is 97. Her USCG Certificate of Inspection allows for 60 persons onboard while underway and she must remain within twenty miles of safe harbor of refuge while carrying passengers for hire.

The Mystic Whaler features 15 cabins providing overnight accommodations for 36 guests. Three cabins include en suite head with shower. There are three additional heads (with showers) on board.

The hull of the vessel is 5/16” steel plate from the lower chine down and ¼” steel plate from the lower chine up. Masts are steel with 14” diameter. Spars are Douglas Fir. Sails include a main, fore, staysail and jib. The decks are clear Douglas Fir with the quarter deck having been replaced in 2016.

Power is provided by a 1967 Detroit 6-71. It was rebuilt in 1982. Electrical power is provided by a 1985 Northern Lights 30KW generator. Both the Detriot 6-71 and the generator are regularly serviced and are in excellent working order. The boat is equipped with an inverter.

Electronics include a Raymarine C90 with integrated GPS/Chartplotter, radar and AIS. There is an additional Garmin 440 GPS onboard. Additional electronic equipment includes a depth sounder and two VHF radios with DSC.

Ground tackle includes two 500 pound Fisherman anchors, each with 300’ of 5/8” galvanized chain. The windlass is an Ideal HDA single phase 220 volt.

Two tenders are included. One is a 14’ pea pod. The other is a 16’ Amesbury skiff powered by a 20HP outboard.

Galley equipment includes a Dickinson Beaufort diesel fired cook-stove, a 55 cubic foot refrigerator with cold plate refrigeration and a 5 cubic foot freezer.

Tankage includes five holding tanks with a combined capacity of 900 gallons. The boat carries 900 gallons of water. It holds a total of 850 gallons of fuel in two tanks. The hot water heater holds 55 gallons and was installed new in February 2016.

The Mystic Whaler has been owned by the seller for 23 years. The Whaler is well known in the Tall Ships community and enjoys an outstanding reputation for sea worthiness and for being maintained in excellent condition. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of America’s maritime heritage.

Over the years, the Mystic Whaler has successfully participated in a number of endeavors and has been financially self-sustaining. The owner has never relied upon or taken public money, unlike many vessels in the Tall Ships community. The mainstay of the business has been passenger day sails; two, three and five day overnight cruises throughout southern New England and Chesapeake Bay; as well as lobster dinner, Sunday brunch and luncheon cruises. The Mystic Whaler has been a frequent participant and/or sponsor in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, the Cambridge Schooner Rendezvous, New London’s Annual Sailfest, and various Tall Ships America and OpSail celebrations.

The Mystic Whaler has consistently demonstrated a leadership role in providing educational opportunities to a number of constituencies. Most notable among these achievements has been the Whaler’s participation in the Hudson River each Spring with the Sloop Clearwater. The environmental educational programs offered by these Tall Ships has been described as a “model for on-board education programs.” The Mystic Whaler has also provided on-board training to diverse groups such as at-risk inner city youth, high school and college students, women sailors and Officer Candidates of NOAA. Most recently the Mystic Whaler has been chartered for a Maritime Studies course at the University of Connecticut.

The new owner of the Mystic Whaler will be walking onto a schooner that has been meticulously maintained. The vessel has served current ownership and the extended community of sailors who love her admirably. Whether continuing in the passenger trade, providing educational programs, operating as a pirate ship or serving as a private yacht, the Mystic Whaler will continue to be well respected as a result of a decades old commitment to excellence.
